Women are 3x more likely to develop a repetitive strain injury than men. This is mainly due to the fact that women tend to be smaller and therefore areas such as the carpal tunnel are narrower and more likely to become congested. This will in turn cause tendons to become irritated and nerves trapped which may cause pain. It is particularly important for women to drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day. This prevents dehydration particularly of the muscles and tendons and consequently reduces injury risk. Hormonal changes appear to also play a major role in contributing to the development of R.S.I’s. During pregnancy, whilst breast feeding and during the menopause women are more susceptible to repetitive strain. Expecting mothers are more likely to develop repetitive strain injuries as the hormones caused by the pregnancy will soften their joints and bones. Maintaining a good joint posture is highly important in preventing injury. Above all it is important to remember to keep a straight wrist particularly when lifting things like hot, heavy saucepans. If you think about when it is that you actually cook, would it be fair to say that this is often at a point in the day when you feel tired and hungry? This is in actual fact at a point when your body is at its weakest and most likely to injure. Think about this when you next buy good quality cookware. Stretching exercises can improve blood circulation and help to keep the joint supple and well aligned. Maintaining a healthy diet is also critical to the well being of the unborn child. If you experience difficulties performing simple tasks in your everyday lives, let us know about it. Inventions are often born out of solving problems. The more we know about your problems the easier it is for us to solve them. |
